Ginger Simpsonabout this book: A year spent in a surprising career change from University Administrator to a Correctional Officer in a local jail led me to write First Degree Innocence. I picked the title because it seems everyone in jail likes to proclaim their innocence on a daily basis. My research was based on working with inmates and learning the games they play. As in most stations in life, bullying occurs, and there are always those who rule the roost in jail and seem to get away with much more than others. Law enforcement seems to also attract employees who like to exhibit power and flex their muscles; I'm not one of those but I truly believe I'm in the minority.
I tried my best to create a naive fictional heroine, and I guess I succeeded because one reviewer found it unbelievable that someone so young and inexperienced could exist while incarcerated. She didn't say it quite that nice, but that was her gripe. I dealt with those kinds every day...scared, sorry, not understanding what they did, and hoping for someone to help them. Yep, being naive doesn't keep you from trouble.
I am most proud of the books beginning, where I showed the reader the dreariness and tiring routine facing those who dwell behind bars. On the other side, though, fictional romance stories require a happily-ever-after, and finding one in this situation wasn't an easy task, but I managed to tie things up nicely. For those non-believers, I offer over 365 days of experience in the environment I wrote into my novel.
