Jan Bosabout this book: This mystery novel is based on real events. Although these events took place many decades ago, the names of the characters and the town have been changed.
I suppose that superstition knows no boundaries. Whether you live in the East, the West Coast or in between, somewhere in a small village, you will find a Witch, an overzealous Police Inspector, and many people who are afraid of both.
I was born in such a town before my family moved to a large city on the coast. Every year I spent a good part of my summer vacation with my cousins at my birthplace where the Shadows in the Rye captivated the imagination of the old and the young.
I like you to meet the Witch, Bennie, who so many people were afraid of, and the Inspector Lans Dillen, who I saw as a bully, rather than an officer of the law. He thought of himself as an example of perfection, and perhaps he was, but he might have been the most feared person in town. His name is Lans Dillen and many young kids had a run with him, either innocently or provoked.
Bennie's house was on High Street and you often could see her peeping through a crack in her dirty curtain at anyone passing by. I was not afraid of her, but something about her gave me the creeps whenever I saw her and left me, and many other people convinced that she was a witch.
Little Judy, a friend of Tina Van Land was found dead in a rye field next to Bennies house. Tina and Bennie, both suspected by Lans Dillen, must prove their innocence. When Bennie suggested that Tina was involved, Tina decided to use the help of her boyfriend Tim to silence Bennie. If I would tell you more I would spoil your reading.
As it still is in many small towns tucked away in rural areas, this town had its secrets. Do not judge the characters too hastily, as you will find out that anyone could be the bad guy, or the good guy.
