Book: STOPPED COLD by Gail Pallotta

Gail Pallottaabout this book: The theme for Stopped Cold rattled around in my head for a long time. As a young person and an adult I saw people suffer heartbreaking circumstances because they didn't win, or become number one. I'm not sure if this phenomenon occurred more in my life than in others or not, but I kept thinking that we don't have to be the best. We need to do our best with the gifts God gave us. We can compete in anything from pie tasting to quilting, but when I think of competition, I think of sports. I wanted the book to be fun to read, and I'd always loved mysteries, so I made it a sports mystery. A young man takes a steroid and ends up in the hospital. His sister and her friends chase after him, rather like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.
I wrote an article based on the book, "Youth Succeeding, Win or Lose." In it I quoted coaches, ministers and the father of a professional athlete. In a sentence they advise making our goal to win to bring out our best, but play for the Lord, never give up the joy of the game and rejoice in the victories of others.
This book finished 4th in the 16th Annual Preditors and Editors Readers' Poll. One reader said, "One of the best books recently published dealing with self-esteem, drugs and the drive to be #1 at any cost..."
It was also a 2013 Grace Awards Finalist.
