Book: On the Rocks (Dana Cohen Mysteries Book 1) by Rebecca Markscategories: Book, Women's Fiction, Skinheads, Detective Story, Procedural, NYPD, Sex Trade, Mystery
Rebecca Marksabout this book: On the Rocks is a crackling mystery with a cast of characters who are neurotic, quirky, and complex. Inspired by the beautiful north fork of Long Island and its coast along the Long Island Sound. Primary readers are adults who enjoy solving a complicated mystery along with the detective, and who like to see wrongs righted. The title is a double entendre, which refers not only to the rocky shore of the Long Island Sound, but also to the protagonist—Dana Cohen's—drinking problem after she retires from the NYPD. Research for this book involved criminal procedure in Suffolk County, as well as insight into the area and its characteristics. Throughout the course of the story, Dana is also wrestling not only with her own demons, but with those of her estranged husband Pete Fitzgerald. By the end, she has worked out some of her own confusion, but not entirely, even though she has gotten to the bottom of a frame-up that could have prevented justice from being done.
From Taylor Jones review: "This is a well-told story with realistic characters; complex mysteries; and a strong, well-thought-out plot."
From Regan Murphy review: "No super-heroes or legendary detectives in this one. Just a good solid plot, very believable characters, a complicated and intriguing mystery, and plenty of edge-of-your-seat action."
