Maryann Millerabout this book: Doubletake was the first mystery I wrote some years ago, and it was published by a small press that did little marketing. I always loved the story, and the twist that my co-author came up with to create the "doubletake," so I acquired the rights and decided to publish the book myself. In my writing, I focus on strong women, and Detective Barbara Hopkins is one tough cop. She proves that in the showdown with the killer.
I have always enjoyed police-procedural novels and television shows, and that interest led to this book and the Seasons Mystery Series that are all about detectives and the work they do. Chasing killers and other criminals is not an easy job, and the processes of solving the crimes are fascinating.Margaret and I did a lot of research, interviewing police officers, a forensic psychologist, medical examiners, and other law-enforcement folks so we would get it right. When professionals read a mystery, they do appreciate that an author is accurate in how the professional is portrayed.
We do hope that readers enjoy meeting Barbara and are surprised at the ending. We were a bit surprised when the idea for the ending came to Margaret. That was not how we originally plotted the story, but the book is better for the change. At least most readers seem to agree.
"The book is well plotted and it is obvious that the author is an experienced writer. The ending is quite satisfying and surprising." Martha Hopkins at Reviewing the Evidence
