Stephen P. McCutchan about this book: A good mystery helps solve a puzzle and restore logic to life. A Star and a Tear, amzn.to/1aTDdgs involves a pastor who emerges from a period of personal grief to help the police track down a serial rapist with a religious fixation. In addition to identifying the rapist who terrorizes his city, in this mystery-thriller the pastor, Frank Sessions also wrestles with that strange puzzle of the symbiotic relationship between sexuality and spirituality. Why is it that sex and religion, which contribute much that is good in life, have been the basis for some of the most violent events in history across the world?
A pastor's life is anything but boring and routine. Pastors regularly seek to solve the mystery of life and restore our understanding of what can fill our lives with hope. The complex life of a pastor is filled with challenge and courage, hope and despair, suffering and healing, trust and betrayal, temptation and bold faithfulness, evil and good. Through A Star and a Tear, amzn.to/1aTDdgs, as well as my series of Clergy Tales—Tails, amzn.to/13VO446, I want "to restore respect to clergy one story at a time." They are not always right, and at times fall prey to tragic temptation, but they are involved at the nexus between finite life and eternity and they seek to understand how life makes sense.
I want to encourage groups of people to read A Star and a Tear together and discuss the underlying themes of life that are woven into the story. I think I've even worked out a way to provide anyone who wants to make a group purchase of printed books for a book club or discussion group to get a discount.
