Celia Conradabout this book: Wilful Murder is a cerebral legal crime novel. It is the second part of the Alicia Allen Investigates trilogy featuring Alicia Allen, the Anglo-Italian lawyer based in London.
As with the first part of the trilogy, A Model Murder, I have used my legal background and experience and love of all things Italian in the writing of this book. Wilful Murder as the name suggests is about an inheritance. There is much scope for intrigue and murder when it comes to money and Wills.
In A Model Murder the victim was Australian and the Australian theme is carried forward into Wilful Murder. The young heiress Isabelle Parker who is about to inherit a multi-million pound inheritance from her English grandfather spent all of her childhood in Melbourne, Australia. She instructs Alicia to make her a Will and tells her that there have been too many 'accidental' deaths in her family and that she does not believe that either the recent death of her grandfather or brother were accidental at all.
As fate would have it, Alicia finds herself travelling through Australia in search of answers and on the trail of a murderer. But with murders taking place on opposite sides of the world in different time zones tracking down the killer is no easy task. Will Alicia be able to catch the killer before Isabelle becomes the next victim? Enlisting the help of Alex, Alicia's 'love interest' the two of them delve into Isabelle's complicated family background, but will it provide Alicia with the answers she needs before it's too late for all of them?
When I created the character of Alicia I had in mind to write a crime trilogy. Writing Wilful Murder was the biggest challenge because it is the "link" book and although I wanted to carry on many of the themes of the first book I also chose to make this a very different book. The research for this book was extensive. It is a complicated plot and there are a number of red herrings but unravelling complicated legal issues is never easy at the best of times.
I spent a few weeks in Australia visiting all the places mentioned in Wilful Murder and this was not only a wonderful experience for me but I was able to gather all the information I needed for writing the Australian part of the book.
Due to the subject matter of the book it is for an adult readership. The third part of the trilogy is Murder in Hand.
• "As a lover of cozy and cerebral mysteries, I enjoyed this ripping good tale of a young endangered heiress-to-be, a dead man's will, murdered relatives and love's labor rewarded. British author Celia Conrad has concocted a pastiche composed of the basic elements of a cozy-cerebral murder mystery that spins on disgruntled relatives, while reinventing it with elements that include travelogue, Greek Tragedy, Shakespeare and Love Story…" — Marlan Warren, Open Salon
