Sandy Graham about this book: Salt Spring Island in 1952 contained a small, close-knit community of farmers, loggers and those involved in supporting services. Everyone knew everyone else. Secrets were seldom kept in the face of never-ending gossip. Foreign affairs were things that happened on adjacent Vancouver Island. The last event further afield was World War II and then only because some native sons went off to fight in it.
So when a generally disliked bulldozer operator is found in bed with a hunting knife sticking out of his chest, the island goes into a frenzy of speculation. It's a crime police officer Cal Lockhart is not equipped to handle. His captain in Victoria sends out an aggressive detective, Mattie Carlyle, to help with the investigation. Conflicting styles war with growing romantic attraction. She ridicules his laid-back country style while he maintains local knowledge and methods are needed to find the killer. Can they find a way to bridge the gap and solve the murder? And can there be a future together?
