C.M. Albrechtabout this book: Jonas McCleary has always been a quiet guy, a sort of rudderless boat. When he sees an ad for police examinations, he thinks that may be interesting. Being good at written tests, he makes it and becomes a cop, but quickly learns that it's not the exciting and interesting work he sees in the movies and in novels. Disappointed, he leaps at the change to try for detective in small Sand Bluff, California. Sand Bluff is a sleepy village where, as one resident puts it, "Most excitin' day this town done ever had was that there day back in sixty-five whenever that Elvis bus blew a tire and they had to stop an fix 'er. But, hell. Elvis, he wa'an't even on the bus! He done taken a plane!"
However, on his third day, before even getting to know any of the locals, Jonas is hit with a murder victim found in the alley behind the Blu Lite Lounge. Okay, anything can happen, but the next day, Twyla Peters, Sand Bluff's registered resident hussy, is found stabbed to death.
Now, with two seemingly unrelated murders on his hands, Jonas doesn't really know what to do. We've already established that he's good at written tests. No one said anything about his having any specialized forensic training.
There is one bright note: Roxie Hathaway who runs Sand Bluff's newspaper cum print shop, could very likely become Mrs. McCleary.
Problem is, they both have to stay alive long enough to bring a killer to justice and get married.
Being in a killer's gunsights doesn't offer a lot of promise for their future.
