Tiana Laveenabout this book: I Want Candy is one of the more personal books I've written. I wove bits of my past inside of this character, though still kept it mainly fiction. From that standpoint, this was a story I knew needed to be told. It deals directly with self medication - the drug of choice, being food.
Candy, the main character, appears to have it all. She is attractive, despite her weight yo-yo and she is great at her job. However, her love life is constantly in shambles. She is a frustrating character, because she never seems to take the time to self reflect until she truly has no choice. She comes at a cross roads - and she has to love and accept herself, and the role she played in her life, to end up where she currently is. In all of this, she discovers that her boss, the CEO of this large company, has a crush on her. Gabriel is divorced, with a teen daughter on top of that. His schedule is always full, but he makes sure to make time for Candy.
In this story, interracial romance is explored. Candy is African American and Gabriel is white. Though he doesn't have any obvious racial hang-ups, Candy in fact does, and this, along with other road blocks she casts in the way, cause all sort of situations to arise. In the end however - she does what she thinks is best, in the effort to remain true. She has fallen in love with the man, but a person from her past refuses to let her live happily ever after without a fight.
