Book: Breaking Free by Alicia L McCalla
categories: Book, Science Fiction, Multicultural Romance
Alicia Lynn McCalla about this book: Breaking Free is the story of 17-year old XJ Patterson's desire to save her mother from an evil mind swipe procedure. To save her mom, XJ has to reconnect her long lost family members and become a revolutionary. Something that she really hates. In fact, XJ believes that the Revolution has destroyed her family and wants nothing to do with the movement to free Genetically Enhanced Persons (GEPs) from the Coalition to Assimilate Genetically Enhanced Persons (CAGE). This story is intense and seeks to push the reader's perception of people who are victimized or oppressed. It is a story of David versus Goliath or the little guy who must win against the giant.
In Breaking Free, XJ has a heated interracial romance with Brandon. Unfortnately, Brandon's ex-girlfriend won't allow the relationship to flourish. There's a messy love triangle. Finally, did I mention, XJ's cool holographic grandfather? He's XJ's mentor and supporter. There's lots going on this novel and the Genetic Revolution series.
As a school librarian, it was difficult for me to recommend science fiction books to my students of color. The science fiction genre has traditionally not been geared towards minorities. The primary readers of my books would be ages sixteen to sixty. It is especially good for those readers who love an action packed thriller mixed with controversial issues such as racial issues, interracial dating, sex identity crisis, and learning disabilities. I hope that readers find my book inspirational and a good read.
