Book: Pinky Swear - A YA Short Story by Phyllis Zimbler Millercategories: Book, Young Adult, Army Brats, Ft. Knox, Teen Issues, Racial Issues, Military Life
Phyllis Zimbler Millerabout this book: PINKY SWEAR was inspired by a backstory paragraph for Donna, a Puerto Rican and one of the four point-of-view characters in my women's friendship novel MRS. LIEUTENANT.
That novel takes place in 1970, and I wanted to explore Donna's world when she had just entered 10th grade at the high school at Ft. Knox. This was the fall of 1964, and politically for both Civil Rights and the Vietnam War it was an important time period.
In the short story I explore the forces that come to bear on the teenage Donna as well as the life of an army brat who has to move frequently to a new post.
In 1964 as well as in 1970 officers and their families were quite separate from enlisted personnel and their families. This short story also explores this theme.
I am hoping that people who have enjoyed the novel MRS. LIEUTENANT will now read this short story PINKY SWEAR to get a deeper understanding of the character of Donna as well as the military life for dependents at that time.
