Northern Empressabout this book: Most people see Dubai as the fantastic, elegant country of the Middle East with resplendent apartments, villas and dazzling night life. This is only one side. I lived in Dubai, U.A.E. for approximately three and a half years with my spouse. During this time, I saw both the good and the bad sides of the human condition. It was only after a few months that I realized there was more to the city than what we see on television.
All people see of Dubai is the luxury and glamour. What people do not see is the horror and squalor of the people who live and work in the U.A.E., mainly women and expatriates. This is the dark and harsh side no one wants to talk about.
This collection of factual stories is about torture, sexual assault, bizarre murders, abandoned babies and so many more besides, a few unusual and humorous ones. You are taken to the other side of the world and given a chance to witness each story as it unfolds.
I expect the stories to shock most readers. Stories such as an uncle who gave his 7-year-old niece a sexually transmitted disease, a maid who laced the family dinner with her own menstrual blood, new moms jailed with their infants because they are not married or an employer who killed his maid then poured acid on her trying to "wipe out" her features.
I'm passionate about sharing this insight as nothing is what it pretends to be in Dubai, the city of gold. For you, I'm confident you can take away how lucky you are to have what you have and to live where you do.

Wow! This book completely shocked me! I'm so grateful the author wrote this expose. It completely changed my opinion of a city I once longed to visit. I highly recommend this read!
This was a captivating read that I couldn't seem to put down. The author's style is both active and colorful. While billed as true and overflowing with facts, it pleasantly flows like crime fiction.
