R. C. Larlhamabout this book: The Old Man and Me - Book II: Stories I Didn't Get To Tell You the First Time is an overlapping sequel to the original "The Old Man and Me." Set mostly in high school, college, the Army and college again (well, I had to finish) followed by Grad School, this second of an envisioned three volume set of memoirs told as short stories, was written in part to explore the memories that re-reading Book I triggered, and in part to continue to relive the relationship with my father, The Old Man. On the strange and scary side, when I was about twelve we discovered he had serious mental health issues. Life was more than a little surreal for a while, but he never totally lost touch with reality or us. Exploring my memories to write that chapter was the most frightening thing I have ever done that didn't involve fists, knives or bullets. On the romantic side, you'll discover what it was like for a local Ohio farm boy to fall in love with (and win the heart of) the gorgeous and sophisticated daughter of Washington DC urbanites. Between the two events, you'll spend three years with me as a soldier in training and at a South Korean US ARMY post. You'll meet heroes of WWII and the Korean Conflict, and what may have been the first black student to enter an exclusive prep school hidden away in Hudson, Ohio. All-in-all, this book will lead you to say, "I laughed, I cried, I even cheered."
