Lawrence Gold, M.D.about this book: In Trapped, we enter the world of malignant melanoma a disease that kills one American every 61 minutes. Alarmingly, the disease has tripled in the last twenty years.
After Terri Powell's husband dies of melanoma, she devotes her life to finding a cure.
A drug company more interested in profits than helping patients perverts the research project by shortcuts that yield unforeseen consequences. Soon patients are dying from the cure as well as the disease.
• Gold demonstrates once again that he is a master at writing the medical thriller. While he goes a little extreme in his depiction of the lengths that a drug company will go to maintain their level of profits, it is arguably a difference of degree rather than a difference in kind. Malignant melanoma is a rare form of skin cancer but it is also feared in that it can metastasize so quickly that a very small dot on the skin can be the source for a systemic infection that can quickly kill. Furthermore, the incidence rate has tripled in the United States in the last twenty years.
