Lawrence Gold, M.D.about this book: First, Do No Harm is the first in the Brier Hospital Series. I gave me the opportunity to write a novel that realistically reflects what goes on in hospitals today. Illness is complicated enough for both patients and their physicians. The villain Dr. Polk was a talented, beloved physician, but his practice has deteriorated to the point that he's become a danger to his patients.
The novel shows the difficulty patients have in recognizing that they're receiving poor care, and the hospital's difficulty in removing such a physician.
A reflective comment from a review: This is a goodie. Gold has opened my eyes to being a good patient. That is, know your doctor, know your patient rights. Gold's antagonist is Dr. Polk, a very charismatic doc, and his patients love and trust him, but he is the personification of every bad doc who ever lived.
When I read medical fiction, it surprises me that authors feel the need to dramatize medical practice with extraneous factors, violence, torrid love affairs, etc. None of that is necessary as medicine is intrinsically dramatic especially if presented in a realistic manner. That has been my intent in First, Do No Harm and my other Brier Series Novels.
