Sylvia Andrews about this book: A story set in the jungles of Belize and introducing the heroine, Maya, who realizes her dream of joining an archaeological dig and deciphering mysterious glyphs. But she must also confront drug dealers, kidnappers, snakes, and jaguars. Her feelings for a young Maya prince from a nearby village compete with her love for her Navajo boyfriend back in Tucson. With the help of her friends, both real and spectral, she solves an ancient puzzle and helps the animals she loves. An adventure that superimposes teen culture over an old civilization with fascinating results. I was inspired to write this book because of my experience in archaeology, and conflicts I had with dating and career choices in college. I wanted to tap into the mystical and spiritual nature of the Maya culture and also put in a plug for animal rights and the environment. The cover is in keeping with these topics. I did a lot of research for my book. The hardest part was working out the mystery and how it would end. I hope that my readers will benefit from some of the new age ideas in this book about community and life in a Maya village and how people support each other and avoid conflict. I also think it is a good mystery and love story and will appeal to young adults and adults who enjoy mysteries and archaeology and learning about other cultures including the Mayas and Navajos.
