Kelli H. Smithabout this book: Surviving the First Five: Insightful Encouragement for the Newly Married is about real life stories of spiritual growth and the challenges that my husband and I faced as a newlywed couple. It includes some of the most common issues that couples face during the first five years of marriage and relates them to Biblical principles. Issues include learning roles, protecting your marriage, keeping others out of your business, communication, finance, reflecting and enjoying life, submission, and more. Surviving the First Five: Insightful Encouragement for the Newly Married gives readers practical, encouraging, and insightful advice and offers a unique perspective on what it takes to set up a strong spiritual foundation for marriage. Readers will learn how to invest in their spirituality and marriage. Each chapter features reflection questions, exercises, and sample prayers so that readers can further explore each topic and connect with each other on a deeper level.
I was inspired to write this book because I did not have any newlywed couples to share their experiences with me so I wanted to help other newlyweds deal with the transition to marriage from a Biblical perspective. I chose the title 'Surviving the First Five' because the book deals with the first five years of marriage, which are some of the hardest years. Couples are setting the foundation for their marriage. Surviving means a couple has endured and lived through many obstacles and come out victorious. In writing this book, I learned that no marriage is perfect. Marriage is an investment that requires dedication, protection, nurturing, and most of all love. 'Surviving the First Five' will give readers hope that they are not alone. No matter how hard it seems, sometimes, there is no problem that God cannot solve. By reading this book, you are taking the first step to strengthening your spiritual relationship and finding solutions that will improve your marriage.

It's about timeI heard about this book from a classmate who ordered it a few months ago. At first I wasn't sure about it, but after perusing a few chapters and listening to her go on and on about it, I decided to buy it. I am so glad I did.
I like the fact that Kelli Smith does not sugar coat anything. All the stories seem real. I've been married for about four years and did not realize that I needed Surviving the First Five until I started reading it. I like the questions at the end of the chapter. I really liked the prayers she put. It really shows how much she cares about her readers. My favorite chapter was the one on reflections. I get caught up in taking care of kids, working, being a wife and taking care of two elderly parents that I forget to stop and reflect on everything and learn to appreciate my husband. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is married and planning to get married.
I'm not an overly spiritual person, but I liked the way Kelli tied the Bible into her stories. It made me think and want to work on being a better wife. [by Casey Taylor]
