Diane Griffithabout this book: Alison and Rob begin as playmates in the small village of Sarn in North Wales. Although Alison moves away with her parents, Elena and Bill, she longs to return to her grandparent’s house in Sarn. She misses her grandparents and Rob so much.
A sad turn of events takes them back, and she and Rob are re-united.
They grow up within the tangled relationships of a close family life. Her Auntie Gwen suffers her own tragedy that affects the whole family. She has a secret.
Alison finds that her feelings for Rob are changing into young love.
She has to move again with her parents to Liverpool. There she finds a true friend in Ann and finds fun sharing teenage years with a girl, instead of a boy. She also makes friends with little Joan Woods, and the three girls become pals for life.
Rob surprises Alison at her eighteenth birthday party, and the following year they get married. At their wedding, her Auntie Gwen has a surprise when her secret love, Keith Patterson turns up and changes her life.
Alison and Rob are delighted when their baby son, Louie, is born. Something happens to turn Alison’s happy world upside down. Rob has met a woman called Senita and he leaves her devastated.
Joan persuades Alison to go to The Grafton in Liverpool with her and another friend. There she meets Michael Dugald and her world is suddenly brighter.
He shares a secret with her and it seems that his tragedies are worse by far than hers. As she gets to know him, she learns more about his past. She finds herself drawn to him as though their troubles had somehow thrown them together.
Meanwhile, Rob is suffering his own unhappiness; regretting that he had ever got involved with Senita. Alison meets Michael’s parents and learns something shocking.
When she receives a letter from Rob she is relieved and excited. However, she is angry with him until she remembers a story her grandfather told her when she was a child. This gives her the strength of mind to go and meet her husband, Rob. Her grandfather had said, “To err is human, to forgive divine.”
Every character has their own 'voice'. . .
