Chariss K. Walkerabout this book: It was one year ago when Amanda Connors suffered two of the most shocking events of her life. When Amanda's mother died while she was the caretaker, it was expected but still the loss was hard to bear. When Amanda returned to her own home to get funeral attire, she walked in on her husband to find him in their bed with one of her close friends. First, the death and loss of her mother took its toll on her peace of mind, and then the infidelity of her husband and loss of her marriage stripped away her security. Both events happened on the same day only a few hours apart. Amanda could safely say that it was the most devastating day of her life. The experiences left the thirty-four year old rattled and unsure about her choices in life. She had lost sight of herself. Now, a year later, Amanda continues to blame herself for the situation. She wanted to let it go, but it haunted her nightly dreams. She relived seeing her husband, naked and in bed with another woman. Each time the scenario played out in her dreams, it had a different ending.
Two of her best friends encourage Amanda to take time to find herself and do a little soul-searching. Amanda's not even sure what that means, but she's open to the possibility that it might help. They persuade her to find an isolated place to figure out what she wants for the next phase of her life. Amanda is tired of the life she has lived for the past year and would do anything to make the nightmares stop. Grasping for a solution, she follows their advice and travels into the Jemez Mountains for a spiritual retreat where she stays in a remote cabin near the top of a mountain. While there, she persists in her adventure to find herself. Even though she meets a wolf, bear, hawk, and a swarm of bees and is terribly frightened, she refuses to give up. In the end, these totems lead her to much needed answers and the desire to start truly living again.
This heartwarming adventure could be anyone of us as we're faced with personal tragedy whether the crisis we face is death, divorce, or loss. Amanda's steps to recovery as they lead her to healing and her real self might also guide you.
