Bernard Mendilloabout this book: My father always owned Buicks. Never the giant one—never the Electra 225. He owned Skylarks and LeSabres.
I've owned three Buicks myself—currently I drive an Encore. Tiny. But a Buick—and it has holes on the sides!
I had written a novel called "Marvin Piersoll" about a man who realizes he has nothing to lose and sets off on a road trip to discover who he is. It was well received—winning the 2011 award for fiction in the New York Book Festival.
For my next book—I wanted another road trip, but with a huge twist. They don't go anywhere!
That's how I began "Electra 225."
Andy Scalabenfro inherits his father's massive, 8-cylinder ode to America's love affair with the open road—an Electra 225.
Andy and his family are not doing all that well. So Andy cajoles them to take a summer trip from Providence, Rhode Island, to California—for lunch.
They set out—but go less than 20 miles and the car breaks down. They can't go home because they rented their house for the summer—including their good car! They're trapped. They check into a motel for what they think will be one night—until the car is fixed.
It's not one night.
And so they take a trip to find themselves—right where they are.
It's a story of marriage and family and parents and children.
It's a story of redemption.
