Jeffrey L. Richardsabout this book: The Summer of Jenny Wade is my debut novel and, like many authors, the road to its completion and publication proved long and arduous. A good 10 years in the making (longer as the idea came to me at least 15 years ago but germinated a while before I worked up the guts to start writing the story), the novel experienced quite a few incarnations, though the basic story and main characters never faltered, and copious reworkings and rewrites. Many times throughout the process I heard that first novels rarely get published and at one point I set the book aside to finally "move on" but, after living with these characters for so many years, I could not abandon them or their story to the proverbial drawer. They begged to be heard and who was I to deny them. While a work of fiction, the characters and the town in which they live have become "real" to me and I hope that comes through in the writing (reviews state that the "characters still haunt" and they "draw you into their world", which is high praise to any writer).
In the end, I just want readers to feel the story and the characters, to care for Jenny Wade and Brian Thompson as they struggle as outcasts in a small Oklahoma town as they navigate the violence and gossip and lies that ultimately ensnare and define their lives.
