Book: London Road - Linked Stories (London Road Series) by Tessa Smith McGoverncategories: Book, London, Boarding House, Fiction, Prison, Linked Short Stories
Tessa Smith McGovernabout this book: The stories in this linked collection were written over a nine year period. I wanted to link them to give readers a more satisfying experience - when you're interested in characters, a single short story isn't always enough.
The characters are based on people I lived with in my teens. My mum ran a halfway house in South London and she was known by the local psychiatric hospital to be kind (not all landladies were) so, after Maggie Thatcher closed the hospital, the house was always full. There were often strange things going on and now, I wonder about those people and what happened to them.
The hardest thing about writing the stories is always the same: feeling able to say 'this is finished'. Even now, after they won a Gold Medal in 2012 in the eLit Awards (thanks folks!), I still have to resist the urge to revise.
My husband designed the cover for me. I wanted a variation on the Union Jack so that readers could see immediately that the stories are about English people, and I love it. I've lived in America for 20 years now but I still get homesick. Every time I see it, it makes me smile.
Typically I prefer not to come right out and state what I wanted to say to readers because, often, we each take something different from a story but since you asked...I believe that we all deserve love, no matter what we've done, and I wanted these stories to embody that belief.
