Trent Pettigrewabout this book: This book is about lie detection and how to determine deception from what people say and the words used, whether spoken or written.
• What inspired you to write this book?
As a law enforcement professional, I have instructed countless classes in lie detection and body language. Over the years, I have received several requests to write a book on my unique views on lie detection. I have also spent hour upon hour in telephone conversations, answering questions about lie detection to fellow employees. Upon promoting higher in rank, my ability and time to instruct became very limited. Therefore, I wrote the book to help fellow employees. However, the final action that prompted me to write the book was a classmate that advised me that if just one person knew or learned the information I had to offer, it could literally change lives and/or the course of someones life due to making a decision based on the truth, NOT deception! I had never thought about lie detection in that light and then I realized, I have to write a book to help people!
• Who are the primary readers of your book?
Everyone, and I mean everyone! This is not a law enforcement book! This book is for the common man and woman. Do you think your spouse is cheating on you? Do you think your kids are lying to you or using drugs, etc? Do you interview potential employees or applicants? Want to know if a person being interviewed on television is lying? Need good information to make a business decision? Want to know if a salesman is being truthful? Is a politician telling the truth? Do you think a friend is lying to you? If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, the book is written for you!
• How long did it take to write the book?
Between writing, re-writing, simplifying, shortening, and tweeking, the book took approximately three months to format and write. However, the information has been compiled over the course of 20 years.
• How did I come up with the title?
The title originated out of the class that I created called LIAR. L = Linquistics I = Interview A = Answer R = Reticence. All of these words are explained and their importance revealed in the book. I added the "Made Easy" part because I wrote this book to be as simple and easy to understand as possible. KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid!
• Why did you choose this cover?
For one, I thought it was interesting and kept my attention, but the main reason was because the eyes are "the window to the soul" and a key ingredient to lie detection.
• What was the hardest part of writing the book?
#1. Finding the time to write while maintaining a busy work schedule, coupled with ensuring quality family time.
#2. Sifting through the oceans of information and narrowing the information down to the "nuts and bolts" of lie detection. I made it as simple as possible, yet also as effective as possible. I know the information in this book works. Period!
• Did you do research for the book and what did that involve?
The research involved 20 years of everyday use, countless classes and schools on lie detection, and teaching countless classes on lie detection, as well as testifying as an expert witness for the state in cases involving lie detection and interview and interrogation techniques. This information isn't just something I learned in a book. I use this information at work everyday. I have given the reader the best information possible on lie detection.
• Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it?
I learned that this book affects people in a big way! I have had ladies tell me that they wish they had this information during a broken marriage. Teachers telling me that the information has helped them in dealing with students and parents. HR professionals telling me that they have used the information when hiring. Cops telling me they use the information when dealing with drug couriers, etc. The information is relevant to so many more people than I had previously thought of or acknowledged.
• What do you want to say to your readers?
I want to say that the information in this book works and has the potential to change lives for the better. Think about the number of decisions we make each day. If you can make those decisions based upon the truth and accurate information, what a difference that could make in your life. Not only your life, but your family and loved ones! I know that in reading this book, you'll walk away better equipped to deal with deception. Period!
