Christian Monöabout this book: By definition, there cannot be leaders without followers, so why do we rarely hear anyone talk about the importance of followership?
Since I was a boy, I have been told that leaders shape the world we live in. In school I read about historical leaders, at university I studied political leadership. I started working, became a manager and found myself attending different leadership trainings. Along the way I began to question the importance of leadership. I came to realize that "leadership" is a massive industry. There are endless numbers of books, magazines, trainings, seminars, university courses, networks, gurus and so on, offering to help us become leaders (for a fee of course). Then I found that scholars do not agree on what differentiates a leader from a non-leader, but that does not stop people from claiming that leaders are important.
By focusing on those who lead, I believe we have come to misunderstand the true nature of what it means to lead and follow each other. In this book I examine our traditional understanding of what it means to be a leader and a follower. By looking at the history of Man and exploring the world of followership from a follower's perspective, I have come to believe that success is shaped, not by leaders, but by the power of collaborationship.
