Nancy Morganabout this book: Pants on the Ground is a modern tale of a young couple who meet on line. Amy is an overweight, lonely girl who is a daily reminder to her alcoholic mother of the failures in her own life. Amy's entire social life is on the internet and when she meets Zack, who lives across the country from her, she pins her hopes on a life with him where she will be loved and accepted. Zack, on the other hand, is addicted to having sex with as many girls as he can on the many sites he subscribes to. Almost nothing he tells the girls is completely true, as he varies his age and background to suit whoever his latest seduction target may be. When Amy moves to California to be with him, life is just what she hoped - until she accidentally discovers Zack's secret life. What happens next uncovers a part of Amy she never knew existed and neither of them will ever be the same.
I was actually inspired to write this when I saw a guy sing a silly song called "Pants on the Ground" on American Idol a few years ago which was about boys wearing their pants hanging down. I thought it would be a great name for a book. I had no idea at the time what it would be about. Just something about a society in which that particular fashion statement was popular. It took about a year to write and has undergone a few changes since it was originally published under "Pants on the Ground: A Modern Love Story". I changed the name because the sarcasm didn't come through and I think people were reading it thinking it was an actual love story. There is a lot of sex and violence in this story and nothing like a happy ending.
The cover was designed for me by an artist in Lansing, Michigan, based on my concept. I wanted the vision of two people looking kind of wistful, which is how their relationship started - at least for Amy.
I am writing the sequel now, which is more about Amy and her quest to find out who she really is. I want my readers to understand that the sordid nature of the internet really exists and, although my characters take it to the extreme, you have to be careful who you meet there. The internet causes an unreal sense that you may know someone and the results of the deception can be deadly.
