Victoria Pitts Caineabout this book: I often sat in front of her on the braided rug when my mother read letters from her Great Uncle Bud. He wanted her to know our family history: a town named after my maternal 3rd great grandfather in Texas, cattle drives, and trips around the horn from San Francisco. On one such trip my ancestors buried the money they'd made from the cattle drive and one hundred and fifty years later, my family still occasionally searches for it.
I was eight or nine years old when I heard those letters, but it sparked an interest in genealogy and a need to tell the story.
Alvarado Gold is the fictionalized event of four modern day cousins looking for the spoils after their grandfather's funeral. There's one other cousin, too, who they can't locate, but he finds them wanting his share of the proceeds. The heroine, Addie, falls in love with a BLM agent who tries to help them and they all realize their grandfather had different plans.
I carefully researched this novel traveling to the county seat in Texas where the original papers were filed for my family's land. What a thrill to touch the actually paper work and later in the day, locating the original property, I stood at the foot of my 3rd great grandfather's grave.
