Sydell Voellerabout this book: This book is about a young widow, Rebecca, and her daughter, Wendy, who have returned to Rebecca's hometown on the Oregon Coast. Rebecca was once married to a popular movie star who was killed by a crazed fan. At the time, they'd lived in L.A. where Wendy had been born. Now Rebecca hopes to heal from her grief and find peace in returning to the old Victorian home where she first met her late husband when they were working on a movie production together. Yet the owner of the home, Mark, a psychiatrist, is determined to convert it into a half-way house for his patients that have been discharged from the local psychiatric hospital. Rebecca wants to buy the house and he refuses to sell it to her. Mark believes it is God's will for him to move forward with his plans for the half-way house, and he is willing to stick to his beliefs.
When Rebecca and Mark meet, their magnetic attraction to each other is undeniable, and little-by-little Rebecca realizes she is falling in love with him. Yet sparks continue to fly as they grapple with their opposing goals for the lovely old Victorian home. In the end, will they overcome their differences and make a lasting commitment to each other?
I was first inspired to write this book after I'd read a newspaper article about an old Victorian home on the Oregon coast that had once been the filming site for the movie "The Goonies." The conflict underscoring the article was perfect for a seed plot, and from there, the story grew. A second news article further fueled my inspiration for this book when I read about the uproar in a local neighborhood over the proposal for a half-way house for patients with mental illness. The two ideas meshed nicely and hence, A House Divided was born!
