Meryn G. Callanderabout this book: Betrayal hurts, and the consequences are profound, deep and enduring. Whether you are a woman who is healing from a current betrayal, or a woman who carries remnants of past infidelities, this book is written for you. It is also written for the woman wanting to protect her own relationships from infidelity, and for all those—women and men—seeking to better understand and support others through this challenging time. However, first and foremost, this book is written for me—and my daughter, Siena Ariel.
• "A brave and searching book for the intelligent reader who is hungry for answers, reflection, understanding and validation."
— Rachel Morris, counselor, psychotherapist to Cosmopolitan, UK
I wrote this book to make sense of my world when I found my partner of over two decades was cheating on me. I wrote to understand and give voice to the shock, anguish, and devastation that suddenly consumed my life. I wrote to understand why and how this man who had professed to love me, and the father of my child, could do this. I wrote to understand how another woman could partner with him in doing this—and how I could hate anyone so much, I wished them dead.
I wrote to understand how it could be that while he was the one who had stooped so low it was I—not he—who was consumed by shame. And how it could that people I had thought to be "our" friends, "my" friends, were avoiding me—and not confronting him on what he was doing. I wrote to fill the loneliness and abandonment I felt while life, it seemed, roared on as usual for everyone else.
I wrote to understand and work with the anger, grief, shame and rage—that surfaced again and again throughout that first year, and the second, and into the third. I wrote to understand why so many women I talked to still carried remnants—some large, some small, of that experience, even decades later. I wrote to understand how I—we—can make good of these uninvited, unwanted experiences in our lives. And how we can live to laugh—and love, again.
