Book: I Got Here As Fast As I Could by Rebecca Del Giudicecategories: Book, Literary Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, Historical Fiction, Louisiana, New Orleans, Hurricanes, Search and Rescue, American Fiction, American South, Maine, Hurricane Katrina
Rebecca Del Giudiceabout this book: I was inspired to write this book after doing extensive research about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The fact that many New Orleanians rose to the occasion and saved their neighbors was not reflected in the news reports. The truth is, there were many heroes who emerged from within and outside of New Orleans in the days after the levees broke.
This novel was inspired by these real-life heroes and the brave actions they took to save the lives of thousands of people trapped in the floodwaters.
The novel focuses on three stories, all based on real events: A woman who drives for thousands of miles to help with the rescue efforts; a doctor who struggles to keep his patients alive in the aftermath of the flood, and a couple trapped in their flooded home.
This book was a labor of love and the culmination of five years of research, workshopping, revisions, and peer reviews. It is dedicated to those who didn't make it, to those who lost their homes, and to those who helped with the rescue efforts.
