Lilian Gardnerabout this book: My first title for Freak-out was 'Uncanny Story', but I changed it when two young lads told me it was a scary, horror story, and that I needed to change the title. I then wondered if the book was worth publishing. My grandson, Alberto did some research and told me that horror stories were popular and encouraged me to refine it. Therefore, I worked on it, polished and revised repeatedly, had it edited and proof read, and Alberto created the cover art before uploading to Amazon.
The source of inspiration for this 'uncanny' tale came when I noticed a blackbird perched in the branches of a fir tree in the garden, whose branches brush against the windows of my lounge. The bird came at the same hour, perched in the same branch for three days consecutively, and seemed to be staring at me. Then, my tabby cat, Muffin, uttered a strange, throaty growl from the kitchen below. I called to him and as I watched him ascend the spiral stairway, he seemed to have said something. I visualised him turning into a man, and my story took shape.
I was born in India, a land of myth, magic and spirits, which has influenced my boundless imagination. I am often surprised at my own creations, some scary and some beyond the most beautiful, breath-taking places.
The most difficult part of writing Freak-out was the shift in scene for characters, and of how much I should involve the two children in the scary adventure. Although this is a tale of fantasy, I worked on making the characters believable.
I took me a year to finish and publish my book, and the thing I learned is that it takes patience and hard work to get a story, novel, article for publication 'just right'.
To all those who read Freak-out, I hope you will enjoy it, and I will be grateful if you leave a message or review.
