Billy Wellsabout this book: Black As Night is a compilation of 32 short stories in the horror/thriller with surprise endings. Nineteen of the stories were written at various times in my life; the remaining thirteen were written during 2010 after I joined a weekly writing group upon relocating to Florida.
The plots of four of the stories in Black As Night came from brainstorming with my son, Christopher on family trips in my car to Disneyworld when he was between eight and twelve years old. I said to Chris, "Let's write a story. What do you want to write about?" After some thought, he replied, "The Babysitter." The same scenario occurred on three other trips for "Snap," "The Initiation," and "The Ax."
As I mentioned elsewhere, I wrote the story, Black As Night, which was originally entitled "The Cloaked Avenger" as a high school assignment in my senior year, and decided to use it as the title for the book. I did a search many years ago, and, at that time, could not find a movie or a book with that somewhat obvious title. Today, there are several books with the title but no movies I am aware of.
I wrote a poem entitled "The Velvet Cage" in my freshman year in college, which my English professor and advisor, gave me an "F" on because he didn't believe I wrote it. I could see that continuing, as an English major was futile since the stodgy professor apparently did not think someone who looked like a linebacker could be poetic. That unpleasant injustice where I was found guilty without a trial caused me to switch my major to Business Administration. I later expanded the poem to a story, "The Velvet Cage" a few years later and polished it a bit for inclusion in my book, Black As Night."
An excerpt from the poem:
And all her lonely life she mourned and lay in velvet there
To hear the whisper of the wind and footfall on the stair.
And through the lace, she saw the window that screamed with iron bars,
But still she listened in the darkness and counted falling stars…
I always wondered what the professor thought when he found out his former student, a Business Administration major, was asked to write the poem that was engraved on a plaque and presented to the Dean of the College at his retirement celebration.
Since Black as Night was my first book, I hired Createspace to design the initial cover, format the book, and edit it for me.
My message to my readers is I hope they enjoy reading my stories half as much as I enjoyed writing them. It's not for the money, I assure you.
