Ryan Callawayabout this book: "Lights Out" is the story of three gang members and an initiate out for blood who end up targeting someone far more evil than themselves. The title is derived from the rumored gang initiation ritual where the gang drives vehicle around at night without the headlights on. When someone gives a "courtesy flash" to warn them, they track that person down and mercilessly slaughter them and all the other vehicle's inhabitants. Durrell, due to circumstances beyond his control, is involved in the ritual one night and when a large white van flashes its headlights, he and the gang pursue. They overtake the vehicle abandoned in the middle of a road and discover corpses inside. The driver has mysteriously vanished... until he returns, intent on picking them all off one by one before the night is over.
In a story about gang members attempting to commit murder, readers may worry that they won't be able to relate to anyone, but in real life many people involved in gangs don't want to be there and certainly aren't bloodthirsty. This novel has depth, especially regarding the protagonists, that prompted these remarks from one reader on Amazon "The main two characters of Durrell and Jennifer I loved. I liked her spunk and his thinking on right and wrong, and doing good for his grandmother which in turn makes him consider doing something so evil." And although well intentioned, Durrell will be forever changed due to his actions on this night... if he survives it.
