David B. Silvaabout this book: Through Shattered Glass is a short story collection. Short stories are how I learned the craft of writing. Though it's a discipline far different than writing a novel, and some writers believe it's much harder, I personally enjoy the satisfaction of having a completed story in a relatively short span of time.
These are horror stories, or at least they ride the edge of horror. Some readers think of them as Bradburyesque, others think of them as along the lines of The Twilight Zone. In either case, I'm greatly flattered. Both have been tremendous influences on my writing path.
The most difficult story to write in this collection was "The Calling," because in many ways it was very autobiographical. In fact, I was so close to the story that it was rejected by several publishers who thought it was powerful, but not really horror (which was my primary market at the time). Eventually, one publisher made a suggestion for the ending that brought it all together in a way I couldn't have imagined without his help. I'm very proud of this one.
Maybe that's the biggest lesson that I drew from this collection ... don't be afraid to listen to your editors!
