Gary Jonasabout this book: One-Way Ticket to Midnight is about a down-and-out bluesman who teams up with a biker to stop a supernatural killer. Howlin' Roy Porter is an unlikely hero. He gave up his music after the love of his life married another man. Roy found himself homeless on the streets of Tulsa. Someone starts murdering the homeless, and Roy turns to a biker named Jim to help find and stop the killer because Roy could be the next victim.
At its heart, this novel is about the power of music. It's also about the nature of talent, and how creative people so often self-sabotage themselves. When we find our calling, we need to honor it. Odd themes to toss into what I intended to be a horror novel for people who don't like horror novels.
This book holds a special place in my heart. It was my first novel. Let me rephrase that. It was my first published novel. I wrote a bunch of novels that will never see the light of day. In fact, I did a ritual burning of the manuscript of the very first novel I ever wrote just so nobody would have it to use as blackmail against me. Ha! One-Way Ticket to Midnight took years to write, but I was busy writing and selling short stories during that time, too. I was also living life.
I completed the book in 1990, but it took so long to sell it that I had to do a major rewrite to bring it up to date for publication in 2002. I was pleased to get the book into print so my mother could hold a copy of the paperback in her hands before she died. She was so proud. Seeing the smile on her face that day remains one of my best memories.
