William Randabout this book: My work of horror, "Painted Demons: Possession," can be read as a novel or as a short story collection. The tales follow the investigation of John Hardin, who has traveled from Denver to Philadelphia to learn the truth behind the apparent suicide of his brother, a priest.
When Hardin arrives at his brother's parish, he finds an exorcism in progress. As Hardin, suspicious of the priests and the ancient ceremony, watches the bound man being exorcized and listens to the priests say Mass, the possessed man's voice slips silently into Hardin's mind with accounts of the horrific experiences of the assembled exorcists and other supposedly innocent people.
John Hardin seems open to suggestion, to temptation. Will he be drawn to the devil's side?
The stories of "Painted Demons: Possession" explore the fears buried in the psyche of us all: fear of a loss of control, fear of Devine retribution, fear of spiders, fear of the past and future, fear of the unknown. Ultimately, the story collection—or novel, if you please—examines the gulf between faith and physical reality. Is there really a gulf between the two? Can the truth be found? Do we want it found? "Painted Demons: Possession" will give you a look at the truth of the human condition, with quite a bit of gore included and political correctness ignored.
