Sessha Batto about this book: After writing Shadow Wolf a number of people were curious about Yoshi's younger years. This short work is a vignette of those times, set at the age of twenty - fifteen years before the start of Shadow Wolf. Yoshi has been servicing men for five years at this point, doing his duty however grudgingly. His current client, leader of a rival clan, wishes he were a bit more enthusiastic and sends him to Kyoto for geisha training disguised as a woman. He also sends along a trusted guard whose job is both to guard and to teach Yoshi to appreciate sexual pleasure.
Unexpected feelings are stirred on both sides, and we see the glimmerings of the relationship at the center of Shadow Wolf. Under such intense pressure we get starting insights into the workings of Yoshi's mind and how he manages to cope with both the physical and emotional aspects of his assignations. There is also a unique insight into contemporary geisha culture, so female centric, and the difficulty of being a man in such a world, in disguise yet struggling to retain his masculine identity, at least in his own mind.
