Lindsay Townsendabout this book: Just as 'The Snow Bride' is my medieval take on Beauty and the Beast and 'A Summer Bewitchment' is my medieval take on the story of the Pied Piper, 'Mistress Angel' is my version of Cinderella. Isabella, the heroine of this novella, is very much a down-trodden figure when the story opens. A young widow, she is at the mercy of her dead husband's family and has no power of her own. Even her son has been taken from her.
How can Isabella fight back and how can she recover her son and be reunited with him? In the Middle Ages, that was not so easy for women. How she does so and how the hero Stephen, who helps her in her quest and who falls in love with her, forms the driver of the plot.
Through 'Mistress Angel' I also explore the growing love between Isabella and Stephen. Isabella has not known a decent man before Stephen and I show her gaining trust in him. His family provide a light mirror to her own dark family and show her how close and caring relations can be.
I explore that city of medieval London: its wharfs and river and palaces, the glittering world of the goldsmiths and nobility, the desperate poverty of so many others.
I called the novella 'Mistress Angel' because that is what Stephen calls Isabella as a tender joke. He is less than impressed with the nickname she comes up with for him!
The novella is 28,000 words. It also contains long excerpts of my other medieval novels. It's 99 cents or 77p and is a Kindle title.
