Lindsay Townsendabout this book: At fourteen Alyson of Olverton, in England, hero-worshipped a brave and charismatic young knight, Guillelm de la Rochelle, whom she called 'Dragon'. Guillelm dreamed of marrying Alyson, but her father, Sir Henry, accused Guillelm of seducing her away from her aim of becoming a nun. Thwarted, Guillelm left for the Holy Land.
Seven years later, Alyson hears a rumour that Guillelm is dead. As King Stephen and the Empress Maud battle for the English throne, her father's manor comes under threat. Her troubled sister Tilda longs to enter a convent, too, but Sir Henry cannot afford a dowry for both daughters and insists that Alyson marry Guillelm's estranged father Lord Robert, who will be a powerful protector. Reluctantly, because she believes Guillelm is dead and for the sake of her sister, Alyson agrees. Soon Sir Henry dies in a hunting accident and Lord Robert takes Alyson to his castle of Hardspen as his betrothed. Then a plague strikes and Lord Robert dies. As two local barons lay siege to Hardspen and its new chatelaine, the plague survivors turn to Alyson for protection.
Alyson holds off the barons by various means but is running out of options. Suddenly Guillelm returns to England. Seeing him again, Alyson feels her girlish hero-worship change into love. Guillelm is powerfully attracted to the adult Alyson, now a caring and learned woman and a vivid, black-haired beauty. His hopes become desire, but he is haunted by a cruel rejection at the hands of a woman, Heloise, in the Holy Land, fears Alyson might be afraid of him and resents her previous betrothal to Lord Robert. Torn between jealousy and desire, he offers Alyson marriage. She accepts, praying that Guillelm's feelings might become love, hoping she can convince him of her love for him.
