Mary Anne Grahamabout this book: This book is the 2nd in the "Forever" series, although each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone and the books can be read in any order. However, if we're talking chronologically, this book was the 2nd one written in the series. If you read "A Faerie Fated Forever" then you'll recall that Heather's cousin Vivian missed the closing events because she'd found a way to fund her future. Only Heather knew the secret - Vivian was headed for the gold fields in the California territory of America.
The ton considered Vivan Crandle "the ice princess." But really, she wasn't cold. She was just different. Viv wanted to dig enough gold to fund a future where she could live independently. She didn't want to trade her body, her name or her future for any man's protection. So she secretly buys a half interest in a mining claim and some other assets from the Earl of Haversham. She bravely heads across the world, surviving a harrowing journey to arrive at a cabin where she's confronted by a gorgeous man who hates everything English. Worse, the gorgeous man and his partners own the other half of her mining venture and the saloon/house of ill repute that constituted those "other assets."
Her new mining partner is Colt Star, a half-breed who would never belong to his tribe, he sold himself for food, shelter and survival. As the Savage Lord who would never belong to the ton, he sold himself for social acceptance. As a man with nothing left to lose, he's learned that survival doesn't mean as much as self-respect. He vows he will never play man whore again. Keeping that vow might cost him his heart, his soul and his future.
Colt Star is more properly known as Colton Simon Haversham, the estranged son of The Earl of Haversham. Colt left his father and his father's country behind, vowing to never again step foot on English soil. But Colt's father wants a second chance from the son who doesn't believe in them. The English Earl crafted a scheme to force Colt into a situation where he needs one himself.
The father knows his son, and Colt's savage fire melts Viv's ice, but his hatred of cages crafted in the name of love, and his scorn for all things English send the lady fleeing for home.
Colt's Russian Gypsy partner and an English Duke gifted with a sixth sense force Colt to face his love for the lady he scorned, and the emptiness of any life without her. He follows Viv to the land he hates and uses the passion they share to lure her back. However, among her suitors lurks a demonic Duke who meets rejection with a thirst for vengeance that presents Colt with a choice that casts him into his darkest nightmares.
This book is a real emotional journey. It's a passionate, engrossing story, but by the end, it'll turn your preconceptions upside down. Like one of the characters, you'll wonder if Viv's life is actually crazy, or if it's the rest of the world that's got it wrong.
