Book: The Ashes and the Roses by Siara Brandt

Siara Brandtabout this book: Sometimes a book becomes a secret obsession. The Ashes and the Roses was that for me. I wanted to experience first-hand everything that went into the book. Or nearly everything. So I became a re-enactor of the Civil War. I walked battlefields, explored historic homes and old prisons whenever I could. Of course, there were countless books and journals which were lingering voices that spoke to me as well.
Can we be haunted by memories or by ghosts of by-gone days? Who can say. An editor once told me not to write about the Civil War period because it was too sad. But to me, the pathos, the poignancy, even the tragedy, are the very things that make a love story powerful. The question became: How could I NOT write about the war? When my grandmother said to me one day that I belonged in a different century, maybe she was right.
