Barbara Gossabout this book: Stolen Heritage is the third book written under contract with Fleming Revell. I had the book converted to an eBook so it could be enjoyed for years to come. I got the idea for this book when I read a true story of a young girl who was kidnapped by Indians in Pennsylvania. I was enthralled by the story being forever interested in Native Americans. I wondered what it would be like for an infant who'd been captive her whole life to then try to find her family again. That's the main storyline in Stolen Heritage.
Running Brook was taken in by an Indian Agent named Tatum when the Indian tribe she'd been with had surrendered to the reservation in Oklahoma. She lived with the Tatums for a few years and Mrs. Tatum taught her the social graces, manners, and deportment so that she could some day blend back into society.
When the Tatums thought she was ready they contacted the local fort and requested an army captain who they knew to be a good Christian man and also from the Fort Worth area to help Brook find her family.
Captain Grant was reluctant to take on this job for personal reasons and Brook could feel his animosity and disliked him and instead became friends with his Indian scout, Dusty. Captain Grant took Brook to his home where his mother, Flora, was delighted to have a "daughter" to fuss over. Through Flora Brook learned the real reason why Captain Grant was reluctant to take the job of helping her find her family.
Brook found not only her family, but also discover her real name, and a beloved grandmother. She moved in with her family, but one family member was not pleased that she had returned. In fact, her life was endangered. This danger brought her closer to Captain Grant and understanding his feelings.
One thing to remember while reading a book like this one is, it's fiction. And fiction gives the author some liberties to stretch what probably would not happen in real life... but then again, you just never know.
