Alice Langdonabout this book: Set in Colorado and New Hampshire in 1880, Trusting Desire is a unique "West to East" American Historical Romance, as opposed to the more traditional "East to West" tale.
Alone and penniless after losing her family's ranch, ELLIE BAKER is determined to start a new life. But her dreams are shattered when a manipulative brothel owner tricks her with a false job offer and forces her to work as a harlot. His reason is simple: her father is responsible for his sister's death, and Ellie must pay the price. Her faith in men shattered, she unwillingly shares her body with lustful strangers and unfaithful husbands in a lonely, worthless existence. But when GABRIEL PETERSON, the boy from her childhood, shows up after a fourteen-year separation, a spark of hope ignites inside her.
Gabriel used to have everything; wealth, privilege, a thriving medical career—but all of that changed when tragedy struck four years ago. Guilt and grief drove him to flee to Colorado, where he wastes his days immersed in liquor, gambling and whores. He knows he should avenge the crime committed against his family, return to medicine and confront the kin who assume him dead, but even the most obvious choices are only as clear as the will to resist the bottle.
When the girl from his youth confronts Gabriel, he is shocked out of despair and vows to help Ellie escape her captor... But can he break free of his own demons?
Neither expects the reunion to last, until a wealthy relative summons Ellie to relocate to New England, and their lives overlap in unimaginable ways. Ellie has never felt such desire towards a man before. The more time she spends with Gabriel, the harder she must fight to keep her feelings under control. But how can she trust a man who lies more than anyone she knows?
Beautiful, genuine and oddly innocent, Ellie attracts Gabriel in every way. His feelings run deeper than craving her in his bed; she intrigues and inspires him, and when the pressures of high society become too great, she is the one person he can truly be himself around.
With reputations in the balance, these two must learn to trust in themselves—or risk losing the only love they've ever known.
This is a story about fate, trust, friendship, and, of course, love. Anyone who likes to read historical romance novels with some heat between the sheets will enjoy this book. Victorian romance lovers, especially!
What makes this particular book unique is the fact that there are so few American Historical Romances out there that aren't Westerns. Don't get me wrong, they are slowly creeping out of the woodwork more and more now, but still quite difficult to find. As much as I adore Historicals that take place over-seas (especially England), I would love to see more stories set in the grand Gilded Age of America. There is just so much to play with, which is why I love writing it!
My beautiful cover was designed by the amazingly incredible Michael James Canales. The only thing I did was choose the appropriate models to go on it. I just love the intimate pose.
I had so much fun with this story, and I love all of the characters in it. Perhaps it is because I saw them all so clearly in my head before putting them on the page. I feel a closeness to them that will never leave me. But the book did take me three grueling years to complete, with four or five drafts in-between. This was the book that made me want to be a writer and grow leaps and bounds in my craft. The story was just too important to hide under the bed and move on to something else. It had to be told. I had to stick with it until the very end!
As for research ... I am obsessed with all things 18th and 19th century, so I immediately knew that historicals were the route I was going to take. Reseaching every little detail is so important when writing historicals; I can't stress that enough! Inaccuracies are the first thing a reader will notice, and I certainly do not want to disappoint a single one. Simple things like: Did trousers have pockets? Where did people throw their trash? How long did it take to get from point A to point B in a carriage? What did Victorian Americans eat for lunch? Did they say this phrase back then? Etc. Etc. The list of research goes on and on.
To my readers, I truly hope you enjoy Trusting Desire as much as I enjoyed writing it. As my first full length novel, it will hold a special place in my heart forever. Book #2 in the series is well under way!
