Parris Afton Bondsabout this book: The idea for The Maidenhead came about when I read an actual 17th century London advertisement for 'handsome, educated and honest bride' wanted for the Jamestown colony.
Modesty and Mad Dog are truly my favorite duo out of forty books I have written. Modesty is neither pretty, nor honest, but she is educated - educated enough to start her own 17th century dating service/matchmaking for the other young girls who have signed on and taken the voyage aboard the Maidenhead to contract out as brides in Jamestown.
Modesty's own matchmaking lands her in a quarry ~ contracted to marry the savage, Mad Dog. But he has surprises of his own. He is not quite the savage he would have her believe. Not by a long shot.
I confess that the '30s operetta/film Naughty Marietta also influenced me in writing this novel. Sometimes arranged marriages work because we have time to see more in the other than we would normally with just a passing glance or polite hello in a dim bar. I would love to know what you think about this pair in paradise.
