St. Paul, Minnesota, 1948. Another polio epidemic has swept the country ... sickening thousands, crippling hundreds, killing many. I'll Watch the Moon is one family's story of living through the epidemic, told from the perspective of nine-year-old Nova Tierney. Her mother, Catherine Tierney, brought the children to St. Paul from Wisconsin to escape a cheating husband. Now, she watches as her son succumbs to polio and ends up in an iron lung. As both Catherine and Nova struggle to make sense of tragedy, help and hope come from an unlikely source, a man named Josef Karski, college professor and Auschwitz survivor.
To write this book, I did months of research into the 1948 polio epidemic, the Nazi death-camp of Auschwitz, and life in war-torn Poland after the German invasion in 1939. Whenever I research a book like this, I'm constantly amazed at the true stories of courage, hope and faith that arise out of times of unspeakable heartache and even horror. The determination of the human spirit to survive, and even thrive, in the midst of trials is incredible.
I was inspired by the many stories I read, and I tried to capture that same spirit of hope and faith in I'll Watch the Moon. I hope I've created a story that will succeed in inspiring you.
