Adrienne Morrisabout this book: It began with a dilapidated house set for demolition across the street from where I worked as a teacher. I imagined who would have lived there in 1865 and brought it all back to life with the McCullough family of Englewood, NJ.Once I realized that Katherine McCullough would marry morphine-addicted Civil War veteran, John Weldon the book wrote itself. Well, not really. It still took a ton of research to produce what one reviewer calls "a rich and colorful page-turner" about the long, hard road to one man's redemption.
I thought I wanted to write a Little House on the Prairie for adults, but John Weldon demanded more action and more masculinity making the book edgier than expected. The House on Tenafly Road captures the bittersweet essence of friendship, love and marriage, while remaining true to my original notion that we are put in people's lives for a reason and in the end love will conquer all.
The House on Tenafly Road was picked as a Historical Novel Society Editors' Choice book by the editors who select a small number of titles they feel exemplify the best in historical fiction.
