N.E. Brown about this book: From the beginning, the struggles of this young fifteen year old girl at the turn of the century will tug at your heartstrings and leave a permanent imprint that will keep you reading and wanting more. It is a well written, easy to read book and you will experience a connection to her struggles and emotions immediately. The story takes many turns and is filled with romance, heartache, prejudices and tragedy and includes the 1900 Galveston flood that killed over 3000 people and washed away half of Galveston. Another major figure in the novel is a sinister, pathologically unstable man and his character gets darker and more evil as the book progresses, and will remind you of a modern day Jeffrey Dahmer. His actions turn the book's theme from one of hope, compassion and love, into a dark compelling novel that will keep you memorized to the end. This is the first book of a series that chronicles the lives of many captivating characters. By the end of the third book you will want more. It's like no story you have ever read.
Having ancestors that came through Galveston at the turn of the century and knowing the grief my mother experienced many years later as a single mom at the age of twenty, with three small children, I used her as a role model to develop this character. While writing, I cried, I laughed and poured my heart and soul into creating a story that would give insight into some of Texas' early history. I spent over six months researching the history of Galveston and other surrounding cities that will surprise many readers. All of the characters are fictional, but the historical events are true.
