Ellie Croweabout this book: Kelea, Princess of Maui, was famed as the most graceful and daring surf rider in the kingdom. Chants call her Kelea-who-bears–a-fin and Kelea-swimming-like-a-fish. This book is based on the true story of a beautiful, young princess who was stolen away. This book is based on a fascinating true story. Ancient Hawaiian oral chants from before the 14th century offer tantalizing glimpses of the life of the daring princess. It is also interesting that Kelea's children were the ancestors of the ruling chiefs of Hawaii right up to the last Hawaiian king, King Kalakaua in the 19th century.
This book is written for all readers, young and old, who loved historical adventure written about people who really lived. I've lived in Hawaii for twenty years and wrote an award-winning book Exploring Lost Hawaii, Places of Power, History, Mystery and Magic. While researching that book, I read about the beautiful Kelea who was famed for her surfing skills and who was kidnapped while riding the waves. I loved finding old chants about Kelea and reading what her descendant, King Kalakaua, wrote about her. I hope my readers will love this glimpse of one of the world's first famous women surfers, certainly the first one ever recorded in history. Kelea lived hundreds of years ago, its a privilege to tell a part of her fascinating story.
