Laura Libriczabout this book: The Master and the Maid is my first novel and is the first in a series of three. I am revising the second book and have started the third in November 2012 with NaNoWriMo. The trilogy is called Heaven's Ponds.
These are historical novels set in Franconia, Germany during the Thirty Years War. An obscure time period, yes, but that's what made me write these stories: I was looking for novels in the English language that took place in this period, that had nothing to do with nobility and I found none. I wanted to read a story about normal people and how they lived through a violent war, how they lived and loved and tried to stay alive. I wanted to read something other than pure romance; I wanted to see people as they really are, their faults and their strengths.
I've been working on this project since 2009. The more I researched, the more doors opened and I found a wealth of information in city archives. I thank the German historians and universities that post their research online.
These stories would appeal to women, of course, but most of my readers were pleasantly surprised that The Master and the Maid wasn't just another romance novel. I hope that these stories lead readers to want to learn more about this period in German history.
