Dave P. Fisherabout this book: The war has been over for 13 years, but August Miller, former Confederate cavalryman with the Texas 11th, has never accepted the defeat of the South. Moving his family from Texarkana to Fort Smith to take a job as a marshal with Judge Parker's court he finds his every desire and move thwarted or controlled by the hated Northern victors.
His growing disillusionment with the job, coupled with his seething enmity toward the North, flares into a rash act that turns him into an outlaw on the run. Returning to Texas August sees himself as a Confederate patriot. Striking another blow against the North he soon becomes a hero to secessionists and an outlaw to unionists.
All too soon he realizes what he has lost. He is not a hero and his life is in ruins until a series of unexpected events gives him a second chance to recover his lost life.
